It all started when I was about 3 years old. I would run around like crazy any time my parents would play Rossini's "William Tell Overture." I loved all the classical music I heard at the time, but evidently nothing got me going quite like that one. My dad listened to lots of rock at the time as well-- I remember well tunes from The Police, Talking Heads, King Crimson. All three are among my favorite bands to this day, coincidentally.
Piano lessons followed soon thereafter, and continued unabated for the next 19 years. I began composing around the age of 12, completing my first piece for piano, a Venetian Boat Song I modeled after the Barcarolle of Chopin. I wrote a piece for piano and orchestra at 13, and several more piano pieces followed. Then came music degrees at the University of Houston and the University of Southern California. Several composition awards, countless competitions, an original rock album and untold thousands of hours of practice later, here I am.
